James Harden’s Deal with Adidas

James Hardens Deal with Adidas

James Harden is a basketball player in the NBA for the Houston Rockets. He is also a two-time member of the United States National Basketball team, and won gold medals in the 2012 Summer Olympics. In July of this year he was named the inaugural NBA MVP for 2014-15, and also is known for his infamous beard which he grew in 2009.

Recently, Harden signed a 13 year contract with Adidas. While there isn’t much information on the deal yet, we know that Adidas payed Harden $200 million for the deal. This makes him the most recent NBA player to land such a big deal. Previously Harden was with Nike, however Nike decided not to match the Adidas offer.

Lately Adidas has been falling behind and struggling in the U.S. Just last year, Under Armour took their number two spot for the largest apparel seller. To put things in perspective, Nike sells 90% of the basketball shoes in the US, while Adidas only sells a tiny 3%. Because of this, Adidas is probably hoping that Harden, one of the biggest players in basketball right now, will help their sales.

Nike’s loss of Harden is most likely not a big deal to the company, because they are already well off with Kevin Durant, Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, and many other popular people. In a similar scenario, Stephen Curry was signed by Under Armour after offers by Nike. After Curry was signed, Under Armour saw a 750% rise in Basketball Shoe sales. Maybe a similar thing will happen with Harden, helping Adidas come back from their recent decline in sales.
