What are two books that you recommend and why?
I’m going to start off with my first non-fiction book, “The Demon of Unrest”. It’s an Erik Larson who does an amazing job on non-fiction, but “The Demon of Unrest” is fascinating because it is about the rise of the South and the beginnings of the Civil War, so it’s fascinating about all of the politics that were involved in that.
For fiction, I would say I really enjoyed “Family Lore”. It’s about a family in Houston and the points of view about their lives, and it’s told by women in the family, so I really like that, that point of view.
What’s going on in the library this month?
I got lots of new books before the end of the school year, so lots of the displays; I’ve got lots of award winners, new fiction, new fantasy, and also added to our TAYSHAS shelf, which is the Texas Young Adult Best Books for High Schoolers.
What other updates do you have for students?
The first thing you need to know about is October 21st is when Faithful Paws will be in the library, and I asked them to bring six dogs to come in, so I’ll have that SignUpGenius in Schoology.
Right now I can’t buy any new books because the school board is holding on to our school budgets, so I’m not allowed to buy any books until the school board votes on a new policy that will give control over book purchases to not the librarians.
What would you say to students who have never set foot in the library? What would you say to get them to start to read?
Look at the displays, talk to people, talk to Ms. B, talk to your friends. Do anything like that that will get you reading. Find out recommendations for reading.
