Long-time custodian Javier Hernandez’s birthday was on Sunday, Sept. 24.

The familiar refrain of “Happy Birthday” filled the Commons in a serenade led by Student Council sponsors Christine Badillo and Ricardo Garcia to long-time custodian Javier Hernandez, whose birthday was Sunday, Sept. 24. After the surprise song, the RoundUp did a short Q&A with Hernandez.

Karen Wei: How long have you been working here?

Javier Hernandez: 38 years.

KW: Was this your first job?

JH: Yeah, this was my first job.

KW: What is the best part of your job?

JH: Clean the school.

KW: What is the craziest thing you have seen as a custodian here?

JH: When the students throw stuff in the restroom [laughs].

KW: What can students do to be more responsible?

JH: Pick up your trash [laughs].

KW: How do you plan to celebrate your birthday?

JH: My birthday is Sunday, right now I’m working. Maybe on Sunday, I’ll go to somewhere.

KW: Well, it was very nice meeting you, and happy birthday!

JH: Thank you.

Hi! My name is Karen. I’m a junior and this is my third year on the RoundUp. I love reading and writing; some of my favorite books are “The Moment of Lift” by Melinda Gates and “Becoming” by Michelle Obama. Topics that interest me include social and environmental justice, especially climate change and gender equality. I’m looking forward to making new connections and writing for the RoundUp this year!
