Current and incoming track students are preparing for the tryouts this year. They have been practicing all year during 7th period and looking forward to the meets. Tryouts took place during Jan. 18 and 19 and the upcoming meet is Feb. 23 for varsity.
This year’s runners are hoping to improve and are looking forward to the upcoming season. The students have been through many preparations for the timed trials.
“I’m looking forward to competing against other schools, myself, and improving my time by training harder every week,” senior Gavin Harris said.
While the cold weather makes running harder for some players, others enjoy running in the cold. The weather won’t stop the players from running unless it becomes unsafe, but it will make running more difficult.
“The weather is not an excuse – we are going to run no matter what,” sophomore David Orencia said.
Many of the upcoming runners exercised multiple times a week and worked very hard to train.
“I was on the track almost every day and the days I wasn’t, I was in the weight room,” Orencia said.
Many football players are encouraged to join the track to stay in shape and keep moving to improve their skills for football season later in the year.
“The main reason I joined track was because of football,” Harris said. “We are required to join more than one sport to condition, activate our muscles and be ready.”
In the track season to come, players will compete against other schools, train through strength and conditioning, and, of course, run.
“We hope to improve and grow every day as athletes and always help each other out,” Harris said.
