Different Disease Awareness Months

Different Disease Awareness Months

Abby Gutierrez, Reporter

It’s easy to remember the Breast Cancer and Heart Awareness Months because of all the celebrations and donations that schools, communities, and families put together to support the cause. But what about the diseases that people normally don’t think or talk about, the illnesses of which the public is unaware? Society can often become distracted with everyday activities and busy schedule it takes no notice of the different illnesses many people can be diagnosed with. Other times people can become absorbed with  families and everyday to do’s that they don’t make an effort to become aware of the problems others can be going through.

October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month and every year people make an effort in schools and communities to raise money for the cause to stop breast cancer. While this is very important and necessary, there are also other illnesses that are in need of support that we all might not be familiar with such as lung cancer, diabetes and thyroid awareness.

Statistics show that lung cancer accounts for 27 per cent of all cancer deaths and is, by far, the leading cause for cancer death. But how many know that November is the Lung Cancer Awareness Month? Also in November is the American Diabetes Awareness Month where approximately 29 million Americans were diagnosed with Diabetes. This remains the 7th leading cause of death today. There are many people who are in need of the supplies in order to control this condition.

It’s important to be aware of the different conditions to support many different causes and help the people calling out for help. Here are some Awareness Months with illnesses people might not have known about!
