Sugar Land makes a move

Sugar Land has just come out with another law to add to the list of many rules to remember while driving. Police can now fine up to $500 for texting or talking on a phone except with a hands-free device or if it is an emergency.

This law was decided on February 21, 2017, after the Sugar Land Police Department did a survey with hundreds of people. The law will become effective on March 20th. Warnings will be given the first 90 days, but afterwards, anyone can be fined, even if it’s the first time. Many people agreed to putting this law in motion. A few others solely wanted a law that banned texting or use of social media while driving. This is also shown nationwide through other surveys.

It is shown that it can be just as dangerous to use a hands-free device because while someone is talking, their brain isn’t completely on the road and paying attention to what is going on. Yes, it is safer than looking down and texting, but it can still cause many accidents.

Texas is one of the four states that does not ban texting for anyone over the age of 18. This law in Sugar Land would not be needed if Texas would ban texting for drivers of all ages. It would also help so drivers would not have to be confused about the different driving laws as they go from city-to-city.
