Loving Thanksgiving Traditions

Many families have all kinds of different traditions depending on the holiday. They may go out to eat at a certain restaurant, play a particular game, or get together with family each year. My family has a few fun traditions that are important to me that we do on Thanksgiving.

Before our Thanksgiving feast, my mom will set out two pieces of candy by each of our drinks. Every year it is a different kind of candy, but there are always two pieces. We all sit around the table and one-by-one we take a piece of candy and say something that we are thankful for. Afterwards, we then get to eat the candy. Sometimes what we say we are thankful for is funny, and other times it is something very serious and touching. It’s always fun to hear what my family members have to say and to be reminded of all the good things we have to be thankful for.

Another tradition we have that we do every year is decorate our paper turkey. We have a cut out turkey that we hang on our wall and every year, in the month of November, we decorate it. My mom cuts out feathers, and each day we will write one or two ideas on the feather that we are thankful for. Then, we hang it up on the turkey. By the end of November it is nice, colorful and full of positive thoughts. It keeps us thinking all month about being thankful and helps us to continue to see the good in the tough days we may have.

Thanksgiving is a great holiday to be reminded of everything we have and to be thankful. I feel like it may not be as important to everyone because many people just think of Christmas after Halloween, but I think if you and your family can make some fun traditions, it will become a lot more important to you. I have definitely seen that in my own family and my thoughts about Thanksgiving.
