Debate persists over transgender restrooms

Debate persists over transgender restrooms

Claire Myers, Editor In Chief

For as long as anyone can remember, there have only been two different bathrooms, one for boys and one for girls, and no one questioned otherwise. But, for the past five or six years, views on public bathrooms and who uses them have been changing.

Debates are ongoing  about whether  transgenders should share bathrooms with other people, or if they should get their own restroom. Many say that this is unfair to transgenders because it is puts them in a different category and segregates them from a general population. Others say that this could help to prevent uncomfortable situations that could occur between people in the restrooms.

Many parents are afraid for their children to enter restrooms by themselves. If transgenders are able to enter any restroom of their own free, they think it could cause  rape or kidnapping.

But, from the opposite point of view, letting transgenders choose their bathrooms can be good. It can end the dilemma for them.  It can also help them from feeling like a whole separate group. They will feel more alike and equal to everyone else.
This debate could go on for many more years as both sides try to fight for their rights and privacy. It is a serious topic to think about and decide which side to choose.
