As the new season rolls around, players and coaches are preparing for what is to come. Rangers are looking forward to the season ahead, with hopes of making the playoffs this season. They have been faced with many challenges. However, one thing remains the same: the universal goal to perform to their full potential as a team.
With the first district game creeping up soon on Tuesday, March 11 against Bush High School at Frankie Field, Rangers have been preparing vigorously in hopes of starting on a good note.
“I am looking forward to hopefully making the playoffs and going for good runs this season,” sophomore varsity shortstop baseball player Ruyyan Mustafa said.
P.E instructor and head varsity baseball coach Brett Velliquette said he is excited to see the newer varsity players develop and perform this season.
“We’ve got a very young group, so I’m looking forward to seeing them grow,” Velliquette said. “A lot of growth, hopefully get a little bit better and mature a little bit.”
Nevertheless, baseball isn’t just about winning games or making the playoffs. Many people play because they love the sport and the people it has brought them closer to.
“My favorite thing about Clements baseball is just hanging with my teammates and having fun in general,” sophomore varsity utility baseball player John James Rys said. “The environment and everything overall is just great.”
However, while players are meant to have fun out on the field, it is still important to hold themselves accountable for the team and coaches that are counting on every player. Varsity football and baseball coach Garret Oakley said your effort affects not only yourself but your team.
“My biggest pet peeve as a coach is when we do not meet our full potential because of either being lazy or whatever your excuse may be and not applying yourself fully to the potential you always have when you’re competing,” Oakley said.
As the Rangers gear up for the season ahead, their dedication, teamwork, and passion for the game remain unwavering. With hopes of making the playoffs and a strong drive to improve, the team is ready to face any challenges that come their way. No matter the outcome, this season promises to be one of growth, hard work, and unforgettable memories.
“One day, you won’t be able to keep that potential anymore, whether you graduate or you’re done playing your sport, and then at that point it’s all over and you don’t realize that yet,” Oakley said.

I really liked how the article captured the excitement and determination of the varsity baseball team as they prepare for their first district game. The quotes from both players and coaches really showcased their value of teamwork and what it was like to be a good team leader. It’s nice how the writer highlighted not only the team’s goals but also the personal growth and goals they all had.
