The dance team is having its annual Cuties event at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 22. This is one of their first major events of the year, where they have senior boys perform their choreography.
The Stars, the top of the dance team, work hard to spread school spirit and spend long hours at school to provide the best possible performances. The work is very physically and mentally demanding, as the dancers are required to keep up their academics, much like other sports.
“I like being able to dance with all of my closest friends,” sophomore Star Jessica Lee said. “What makes it even more enjoyable is doing it in a place that I love.”
This year, their theme is “Speak to Me” and is represented by songs in different languages. The theme is especially fitting given the diverse demographic of the dance team. The performances will also incorporate different dance styles, speaking to a variety of cultures.
“I think the theme is very interesting,” sophomore Star Avni Sharma said. “It’s very unique because not a lot of schools other than Clements would do this.”
Additionally, the directors make sure their dancers learn to have a good work ethic. For events like Cuties, the dancers teach the boys all the dances and come early in the morning to rehearse. They also stayed after school to decorate and set up the auditorium for their performance, expressing a great sense of responsibility.
“I learn a lot of things while dancing,” sophomore Star Jessica Lee said. “I even had to learn how to operate the lights for Cuties.”
Hours have gone into working on this event in an attempt to make it memorable for the seniors and anyone else who comes to watch. Being a part of dance means having very different experiences, though the dancers prepare for halftime and their competitions, they get to be a part of and organize fun and more relaxed events for the school as well. They enjoy dancing so much because of the close-knit community and the memories that come with being a member of the dance team.
“I love being a Star,” sophomore Star Lizzy Chen says. “We’re like a family, and I like learning and seeing everyone’s talents.”
