Soccer Legend: Cristiano Ronaldo
October 27, 2015
The most watched sport in the world is soccer and the highest paid soccer player in the world is Cristiano Ronaldo. He is a Portuguese professional soccer player who currently plays for Real Madrid, which is one of the most famous teams in the world. He is a forward and serves as a captain for the Portuguese national team. He is a three time Ballon D’or award winner and the only player to even win European Golden Shoe four times!
Ronaldo was first signed at a local club when he was just ten years old. After a title-winning campaign, he went on a three-day trial with Sporting CP who then signed him for an undisclosed sum. In the summer of 2003 Sporting CP defeated United 3-1. Ronaldo’s performance impressed the Manchester United players. He was signed by Alex Ferguson for the 2003-04 and given the number seven jersey. He requested the number 28 jersey, as he did not want the pressure of living up to the expectation linked to the number seven jersey, which had previously been worn by Manchester United legends, David Beckham. After playing six years at the English club, he broke records for the club. On June 2009, Real Madrid would join the club from Manchester for $80 million, becoming the most expensive player in soccer history. During his six year stay at the club he broke the all-time scoring record of the club and also won multiple champions and awards. He is currently still playing in Real Madrid and will continue to break records for the club.
Anyone who watches soccer today would know who Ronaldo is. He is often compared with Messi for the best player in soccer today. They have different playing styles and play different positions so they’re not comparable. No matter if people love him or not, he is a true inspiration for people to play soccer. In the beginning of his career, he was just a tall and thin person. Over the years, he improved his body as well as his skills. Until today, he still pushes himself to the limit. I think his body is his main advantage compared to other players. Also, when he first started playing in Manchester United, he was often criticized of being selfish and not passing the ball. Today he has improved a lot in his techniques, his body, and his ability to continually get more experience!
