New defensive coordinator, Coach Donovan King, joined the football team this season. King, who has more than a decade of coaching experience, steps into the role with both a competitive edge and a reputation for building strong relationships with players.
Coming to Clements, amid a sea of new opportunities, King was greeted by a familiar face, Athletic Coordinator and Coach Robert Darnell. King and Darnell met more than 8 years ago while working at Ridgepoint High School. The two stayed in touch and often discussed the possibility of teaming up, which is finally happening with the arrival of the new season.
“We had been talking about the opportunity for years, but the stars never really aligned for it to happen,” King said. “When the chance came this time, it just felt right.”
For Darnell, hiring King was an easy decision, citing his “wealth of knowledge” that makes him a great asset for the school.
“He knows the system, the defensive system that I like to run here at Clements, and he has a lot of experience in that,” Darnell said. “He’s going to bring another level of professionalism, another person that has done it at the highest level.”

King was involved with football at an early age, moving up the ranks gradually.
“It was a safe space,” King said. “Growing up in a single-parent home, football gave me direction and purpose.”
Moreover, King has already experienced football at the college-level, providing an insider’s perspective for students wanting to engage in the sport after high school. Beyond his football background, King is also known for his balanced coaching style.
“His intensity is definitely amped up,” Darnell said. “He’s excitable and likes to have a good time too.”
Now that the two coaches are finally on the same sideline, both believe their partnership will help shape not only the Clements’ defense but also the character of the athletes who play under them.
