Minecraft, in all its glory, is a game loved by children and adults alike, having been a predominant game in the formative years of many. On April 4, a movie version was released. The question is – is it as good as we thought it would be?
Let’s start before the movie was released: the movie trailers. Last year, when I was playing Minecraft with a couple of my friends, the Minecraft launcher had ads for “The Minecraft Movie”, and we all were like, ‘Dude, what’s wrong with the Creeper? Why does it look like that?’. We talked about how it was so different from the Minecraft trailers and posters that they would make for Minecraft updates, and it was so jarring that we didn’t like it at all. We did start laughing about it, how stupid it was and whether or not we would watch it. A Creeper being furry was not what I expected for a Creeper. I’m not sure what I was really expecting, but not that.
Hopefully without being blinded by nostalgia, I can give a decent review of what I thought could be better in the movie – although its reputation certainly precedes it. Viral videos circulating about the premiere of “The Minecraft Movie” show adults absolutely trashing the movie theater with popcorn and acting up (grown men, by the way). I understand being hype about seeing a beloved game turned into a movie, but disrespecting a public place like that is just unacceptable and inconsiderate to the movie theater workers. Other than that, there’s not anything wrong with the movie; it’s just a bit childish, which is kind of its whole purpose. Solid for kids, I will say.
Now, moving on to one of the easiest answers to give: my favorite character in “The Minecraft Movie”. Steve – need I say more? Flashback to the old times of Minecraft on the Xbox 360, and players couldn’t use any custom skins except for the ones that they had of Alex and Steve. I favored the Steve skins over the Alex ones, and the default Minecraft skin is Steve (if you don’t choose the thin version, which then it would be Alex). Steve is hands down my favorite character in the movie, maybe due to a little bias. Jack Black does well in incorporating humor into the movie, and his appearance makes him a little more memorable.
On a real note, recommending this movie depends on what people are looking for. It’s a fun watch, but if viewers want something with actual content, then I wouldn’t recommend it.
