Spring is a season of hope and renewal. What books have you read recently that have made you hopeful?
Can I say that I have been reading some new books that are editions or the beginning of a new series by some of my favorite authors such as Suzanne Collins, such as Neal Shusterman. I guess that gives me hope that that there that we have authors who are still writing and still not giving up the battle of being published authors and having their books on the shelves.
Is there an author that inspires you?
Oh gosh, not just to name one author is kind of hard for me. I do like Veronica Roth and Suzanne Collins. I really like their writing style and I’ve become to really like nonfiction in that in the situation of Erik Larson. I’ve got a new appreciation for narrative nonfiction.
What library events are coming up in the next few weeks?
Not only is it National School Library Month but it’s also Poetry Month and so all of the English teachers have — I’ve made copies for them — for any students who are writing poetry. I’m going to submit them to the National Poetry Association or the Library of Poetry and we’ll get that that put in.
I also have a new display of some of our famous Ranger authors who are published authors [and] have written stories or poetry.
We may do one thing as we head into the end of the school year. I want to do a little planning of seeds and I’ve got fun little pots that we can decorate and take home and grow.
How are you planning to celebrate National School Library Month?
I think I’ve been celebrating by getting new books in on the shelves and advertising them.
How should students and teachers celebrate?
Appreciating books and talking about books. I had my seniors come in. We talked about the importance of reading and so I think that’s what it is. I think students need to see teachers reading and teachers need to see students reading.
I’ve even had a couple more kids come in and discover our language library and even check out some books in other languages that that are there.
