Appreciated! I feel like I am really making a difference in my students’ lives!
How do you build trust with students who come to you for help?
I have an open door policy and my students are comfortable coming in to say hi, or to discuss things with me. I never turn them away and I always show empathy and concern. I am kind to my students and parents.
What influenced you to become a counselor? What keeps you passionate about it today?
I was always talking to students about their academic goals and sometimes about their social and emotional issues. I decided then that a school counselor was what I wanted to move to next. Students always need assistance in making decisions, setting goals, and navigating this thing called life as a teenager. I want to make sure I am in a position to remove any barriers they may face as they move forward to success; and if I can’t, I want to assist the student to work around those barriers.
What is one of the most difficult challenges you faced as a counselor? How did you overcome it?
Not being able to reach a student or help a student through difficult times. I have not…
What is one important piece of advice that you believe everyone should hear to help them through high school?
Learn how to balance academics and a social life. You can meet your academic goals and enjoy your childhood at the same time!
What is a common misconception people have about the role of a school counselor that you wish more people understood?
We have ethics, policies and procedures that we must follow. I think people think that we are here to change schedules and grant every student’s wish…but we are not. We are here to produce physically and mentally healthy, prominent citizens – including teaching students to be responsible and accountable for their actions.
What are fun facts that students or colleagues might not know about you that could surprise them?
Not a whole lot. I love to cook and travel!
What is the best professional advice you have received?
Don’t take your work home with you!
