Many students dislike schoolwork. Whether it’s note-taking, an assignment, or extra credit, many students dread having to do schoolwork. This can lead to students putting off assignments until the last minute and rushing to finish the assignment before it’s late. Once they repeat this process with multiple assignments, it leads to students now rushing to finish multiple assignments and causes a lack of effort in the assignments and a low grade.
“Procrastination is a common habit that high schoolers fall into,” senior Leyla Prosper said. “It can cause many effects like stress or poor time management.”
One of the main effects that procrastination causes is stress. There are multiple ways that procrastination can cause stress and all the stress can affect both someone’s mental and physical health. Procrastination can lead to stressful thoughts about unnecessary delays and the consequences of said delays. Along with that, constant procrastination can lead to chronic stress and bad grades which can cause even more stress.
“A student’s grades are heavily affected by procrastination,” Prosper said. “With a lack of motivation to complete school work on time and with effort, their academic performance can be negatively affected.”
Another main effect of procrastination is poor academic performance. When a student procrastinates on an assignment until the last minute, the effort given to the assignment is subpar and leads to bad grades. Along with low effort, continuous procrastination can lead to a decrease in motivation. Low motivation can lead to less effort into assignments and, if prolonged long enough, the student will begin to not complete schoolwork at all.
“Procrastination also doesn’t help everyone the same,” Prosper said. “Many factors go into how procrastination can affect someone like the amount of work they have or the amount of motivation they have prior to procrastinating.”
Procrastination can also affect all students differently due to its many effects, and an example on how it varies from each person is how procrastination affects students in different grade levels. For freshmen, procrastination is a very dangerous habit because the workload is hefty and they can damage their grades for not only that year but the next three as well. For seniors, the workload is not as heavy and it is their last year, so procrastination will still have an effect but it won’t be the same compared to a freshman.
“Procrastination may not be some major issue or addiction, but it still is an issue in school that can hurt student’s grades and future,” Prosper said.
