Best Buds held their first club meeting on Sep. 7th in the morning and afternoon. For the rest of the year, the meetings will be held once a month during all the lunches.
Best Buds is a club that pairs general education high schoolers with special education high schoolers. A lot of the special ed students do not have the opportunity to be in general ed classrooms so Best Buds allows them to meet their peers.
“If we didn’t have best buds those kids wouldn’t be able to be included with other kids on the campus,” Best Bud sponsor Fay Mayo said.
The special education kids are paired with general education kids through Best Bud and provided with opportunities to meet the students around them who are their age. Without this program, the special education students would not have the opportunity to meet the other students they go to school with.
“I hope that in the future it stays well attended and continues to grow,” F. Mayo said.
Best Buds has had over 100 students in the club every year. Anybody can join Best Buds by following their Instagram for updates, or contacting the sponsor, F. Mayo, or the president, Caitlyn Horgan.
“I hope that everyone in Best Buds feels included and like they have friends like it’s more than just a club it’s an actual friendship,” sophomore Isabel Mayo said.
General education students and special education students in Best Buds are encouraged to keep up with their buddies outside of school as well since meetings are only once a month. They have opportunities to do so at socials like the kick-ball social that I. Mayo said is her favorite.
“I hope that more students find compassion in helping their peers whether they are in regular classes or in special classes,” F. Mayo said.
