Tesla Motors is an american car company led by Elon Musk that focuses on electric cars. At the time of the creation of Tesla in 2003, electric cars were not common or practical. However, they set out to change that by designing and manufacturing electric cars that were practical and affordable. Tesla made a giant leap towards that goal when they released their Tesla Model S. It was fully electric, had instant acceleration, handles much better than the average sports car, and also is much safer than any other car on the market.

Tesla continues to innovate, and recently has impressed the world by unveiling their new autopilot capability. Besides driving without the control of a human, it can automatically parallel park and pull into your garage. You can also summon your car and have it drive to you and pick you up. The autopilot system has four main pillars. The first one is a long distance radar that can see through most substances such as snow, sand, or dust. The second piece of technology is cameras that use image recognition software. Third is ultrasonic sensors, and fourth is satellite imagery that captures real time traffic. Altogether, these four pieces of technology combine to create a robust autopilot capability.

Self driving is cool, but it has been done before by other companies such as google. The real breakthrough is the ability for your car to learn how to drive. Everytime you drive your car on autopilot, it learns the right behavior and wrong behavior, so in a sense you are training it. On top of that, all of the Teslas are a fleet and learn together. When one car learns something, it teaches that to all Tesla’s over a network. Essentially, it is a hive mind of Tesla cars. Many Tesla car owners claim to already see an improvement in the autopilot function on their vehicle.
Tesla is improving the state of electric cars along with automobiles in general, and Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, predicts “In five or six years from now, I think we could be able to achieve true autonomous driving where you could literally get in the car, go to sleep, and wake up at the destination.”
